C.O.R.E. Robotics helped to host this year’s VEX Competition at St. Thomas More High School on November 6th and 7th. Each team competed in 5 qualifying matches and then 22 teams competed in the elimination rounds. The tournament was setup similar to a FIRST Robotics competition in order to prepare students for participating on a FIRST team in high school. Each team must create a robot (of maximum 18”*18”*18”) to play this year’s game: Round Up.
The object of Round Up is to attain a higher score than your opposing alliance by scoring tubes upon goalposts, owning goalposts and by the robot hanging low or high from a ladder. A bonus is awarded to the alliance that has the most total points at the end of the autonomous period.

This year was marked by great participation by volunteers and teams alike. The tournament finalist in the middle school division this year was the alliance of teams 2062-U, 2098-H, and 4323-A. The tournament champion was the alliance of 2062-W, 2098-B, and 2177. Other awards were given as well.

Excellence Award: is the highest award presented in the VEX Robotics Competition; the recipient is a team that exemplifies overall excellence in building a well-rounded VEX robotics program.
Create Award: is earned by a team whose robot design incorporates a creative engineering solution to the design challenges of this year’s game.
Energy Award: is based on team enthusiasm at the event; team demonstrated boundless passion and energy throughout the competition.
Innovate Award: is presented to a team that has demonstrated a strong combination of ingenuity and innovation in designing their VEX robot; team whose robot was designed by thinking outside the box, resulting in a unique piece of engineering which forms an integral part of their engineering design solution to the complex problems presented.
Judges’ Award: goes to a team the judges decide is deserving of special recognition. Possible criteria for this award: displays of special attributes, exemplary effort and perseverance at the event, and team accomplishments or endeavors throughout the season.
